The Loures Municipal Council is currently providing support to just 14 out of the 55 families who recently saw their precarious homes demolished in the Talude Militar neighborhood, according to the latest update on the social assistance provided by the municipality, released this Friday.
Out of the 36 households assisted by social services, 14 are receiving support from the Loures Municipal Council, 14 have indicated they found alternative housing with family or friends, one refused the offered support, and seven showed no interest in the proposed solutions, the council clarified.
The municipality also noted that the remaining 19 families, who lived in the now-demolished precarious constructions, did not seek social support.
In total, three families with five minors still need overnight support, and ten families (21 minors) are receiving food aid. Five families have managed to become autonomous by accessing the rental market, benefiting from municipal support for the deposit and first month's rent, the statement added.
Municipal services such as the Employment Support Office and the Migrant Support Office have been activated to assist those unemployed or with irregular documentation.
While demolitions in Talude Militar are suspended following a Lisbon Administrative Court order, the Loures Municipal Council is proceeding with a clean-up operation in the neighborhood to remove accumulated waste, which will continue this Saturday.
Ricardo Leão (PS), the mayor of Loures, has assured that once the suspension is lifted, the demolition of shanties will resume, arguing that these constructions pose risks to safety, health, and human dignity.
