Mercadona, the popular supermarket chain, is set to begin construction on a new store in Alta de Lisboa, with an anticipated opening in 2025. This move is part of Mercadona's ongoing expansion strategy in Portugal, as many customers have long requested a store in the capital.
Currently, the company operates five supermarkets in the Lisbon district, including two in Sintra, one in Oeiras, one in Alverca, and another in Torres Vedras. Notably, on October 24, a new store will open in Sintra (Rio de Mouro), bringing the total to six stores in the district by the end of 2024.
The new supermarket will be built on a 5,000 m² plot, with the land development project handled by SGAL – Sociedade Gestora da Alta de Lisboa. The project will also include an office space and a Co-Innovation Center, aimed at fostering collaboration with customers to tailor offerings to their preferences.
This store will feature a subterranean parking lot and will adhere to the Efficient Store Model implemented across all Mercadona locations in Portugal. This includes wide aisles, a double-glass entrance to minimize drafts, sustainable refrigeration systems, improved insulation for cold storage, LED lighting, and intelligent energy consumption management.
Additionally, the supermarket will incorporate solar panels on the roof for self-consumption, reinforcing the company’s commitment to renewable energy.
Shoppers can expect a variety of offerings, including a butcher shop, fish market, delicatessen, bakery, perfumery, household and pet care items, fresh fruits and vegetables, a wine cellar, and a ready-to-eat section with self-service options and various prepared meals.
Founded in the north of Portugal, Mercadona has had its Portuguese headquarters in Vila Nova de Gaia since 2020. As its expansion continues nationwide, a new office in Lisbon is planned, which will support around 100 employees in various fields, including human resources, logistics, and construction.
