Mercadona has opened its first supermarket in Lisbon, located in Alta de Lisboa on Rua Hermínio da Palma Inácio. The company invested €18 million in this new space, which includes both a store and office facilities.
In the first quarter of 2026, Mercadona will open its second Lisbon store in Quinta do Lambert (Lumiar), bringing the total to 70 stores nationwide.
The Alta de Lisboa Mercadona, the ninth in the district, has created 90 stable, high-quality jobs with permanent contracts from day one.
The supermarket features a 1,900 m² sales area with sections including Butchery, Fishmonger, Delicatessen, Pastry and Bakery, Perfumery, Home Care and Pet Supplies, Fruits and Vegetables, Wine Cellar, and a Ready-to-Eat area with self-service and various prepared meal options for takeaway or in-store dining in a dedicated zone. It offers 300 parking spaces, including six for electric vehicle charging, aligning with the company's commitment to electric mobility.
As part of its Social Action Plan, Mercadona will donate essential goods to the Centro Social da Musgueira from the first day, a practice followed in all its stores.
The Alta de Lisboa Mercadona was built on a 5,000 m² plot developed by SGAL - Sociedade Gestora da Alta de Lisboa. It includes a floor for new offices, accommodating around 100 employees from various fields such as human resources, logistics, and construction, supporting operations in the central region.

Ana Carreto, Director of External Relations for the Lisbon District at Mercadona, stated, "Having a store in the capital was a major ambition for Mercadona, and we can say today is a happy day for this team of over 7,000 people in the country, all working daily to get closer to our Portuguese 'Chefs.' Lisbon is now on Mercadona's store map, with a complementary support office, six years after we started our expansion plan in Portugal."
Diogo Moura, Councilor for Economy at Lisbon City Council, highlighted, "The opening of Mercadona represents a very positive impact for Lisbon and our economy. We're talking about an €18 million investment, directly translating into job creation and strengthening the local economic fabric. Today, we inaugurate a commercial space that generated 90 new jobs, and early next year, over 100 more will join with the installation of Mercadona's offices. This investment is in a rapidly growing and developing area of the city. In the first quarter of 2026, a new store in Lumiar is also planned, reinforcing Mercadona's commitment to Lisbon. It's an important day for the city and its economy. Lisbon has been attracting more investment, and when we attract investment, we generate jobs and, above all, attract talent. This bet on Lisbon should be recognized and valued."
The new store adheres to the Efficient Store Model implemented in all Mercadona stores in Portugal, featuring wide aisles, double-glazed entrances to prevent drafts, more sustainable refrigeration systems, improved insulation in cold units, LED lighting, and intelligent energy consumption management. Additionally, this store has 395 solar panels on the roof for self-consumption, continuing the company's investment in renewable energy to improve environmental performance and save about 20% in electrical energy annually.
Mercadona's long-term commitment in Portugal includes an ongoing expansion plan for six years, reflected in over €1.1 billion invested, made possible by the Portuguese team of more than 7,000 permanent employees.
For 2025, the company plans to invest an additional €157 million in Portugal.
