Summer Tragedy in Portugal

Six people have tragically lost their lives on Portuguese beaches during this year's beach season, which ran from May 1 to October 31. The National Maritime Authority (AMN) released this grim report on Monday, highlighting the region of Algarve as the most affected area.

According to the AMN's six-month summary of the beach season, there were three fatal accidents on monitored beaches, two on unmonitored beaches, and one in other unmonitored areas.

Among the reported fatalities, four were attributed to sudden illness, while one was due to drowning, and the cause of another remains unknown.

The majority of these incidents occurred in the Algarve region, specifically at Meia Praia (Lagos), Praia Maria Luísa (Albufeira), and Manta Rota (Vila Real de Santo António). Other reported deaths took place at Praia do Torrão do Lameiro (Ovar) and Baía de São Martinho do Porto Sul (Alcobaça).

Throughout the beach season, the AMN conducted 1,175 rescues and 3,664 first aid actions, mobilizing a team of 548 personnel. In comparison, 2023 saw 14 deaths during the beach season, with seven from sudden illness and the rest due to drowning.
