Political Scandal Unfolds in Portugal
Marco Silva, the campaign manager for the Chega party's candidacy in the Vendas Novas municipal elections, has been detained by the GNR on suspicion of setting fires near the EM530 road in Montemor-o-Novo, Évora district. This shocking development comes just ahead of the upcoming local elections.
According to security sources, the 40-year-old suspect was caught in flagrante delito early Thursday morning, allegedly using a lighter, a bottle of alcohol, and newspapers to ignite fires along the roadside. The GNR had been investigating a series of small blazes in the area since Sunday, which were quickly extinguished by firefighters from Vendas Novas and Montemor-o-Novo, burning only pastureland.
Jorge Alcobia Pereira, the head of the Chega candidacy for Vendas Novas, confirmed to Lusa news agency that Silva is still officially the campaign manager due to legal complexities in replacing him after lists were submitted to the court. However, Pereira stated that Silva "is no longer exercising the role" and had expressed a desire to leave the party some time ago, with no current contact between them.
Silva has a history with the party, having led the Chega list in the 2021 municipal elections in Vendas Novas without being elected and previously serving as the local party coordinator. He is set to face his first judicial interrogation at the Montemor-o-Novo Court, where possible coercive measures will be considered.
