Family's Grievance
The family of Odair Moniz, who was fatally shot by a police officer a month ago, has formally lodged a complaint against the Public Security Police (PSP) for abuse of power. This complaint was made on Thursday, as confirmed by one of the defense lawyers.
Allegations of Police Invasion
The complaint centers on what the family describes as a police invasion of their home during a period of mourning, shortly after Moniz's death. They assert that this incident has caused psychological and material damage.
Legal Action Initiated
The complaint includes allegations of abuse of power, damage, and violation of domicile by a public servant and has been submitted to the Public Prosecutor's Office against the PSP's General Command and unidentified officers involved in the incident.
Background of the Incident
Odair Moniz, a 43-year-old Cape Verdean, was shot dead by a PSP officer on October 21 in Cova da Moura. This incident sparked unrest in various communities across the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, leading to the burning of buses, cars, and garbage bins, resulting in numerous arrests and injuries, including at least one serious injury to a bus driver.
Official Police Statement
According to the official PSP account, Moniz allegedly fled in a vehicle upon seeing a police car and crashed in Cova da Moura, where he reportedly resisted arrest and attempted to attack officers with a bladed weapon.
Calls for Investigation
The SOS Racism association and the Vida Justa movement have challenged the police's narrative, demanding a serious and impartial investigation into the incident, highlighting concerns over a culture of impunity within the police force.
Ongoing Investigations
Authorities have initiated inquiries, but no conclusions have been released yet. The officer involved remains on medical leave and has not yet provided statements to the Public Prosecutor, although he did speak to the Judicial Police shortly after the incident.
Fundraising Efforts
In the meantime, Moniz's family has launched an online fundraising campaign, which has successfully raised over €29,000 to support their cause.
