Portugal is set to experience a significant heatwave starting next Monday, with temperatures in some regions exceeding 40°C. The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued a yellow warning for a large part of the country due to the "persistence of high maximum temperature values," extending it to the entire continental territory by Tuesday.
Key areas affected on Monday include Bragança, Viseu, Évora, Guarda, Faro, Vila Real, Setúbal, Santarém, Lisbon, Beja, Castelo Branco, and Portalegre, with Beja expected to hit 40°C. By Tuesday, Porto, Viana do Castelo, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga will also be under alert, with Santarém predicted to reach a blistering 43°C.
The General Directorate of Health (DGS) has issued recommendations to cope with the heat, advising the public to stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, and spend time in cool or air-conditioned environments. They also recommend avoiding direct sun exposure, especially between 11 AM and 5 PM, and using sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
Special attention should be given to vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly, chronic patients, pregnant women, and outdoor workers. The DGS emphasizes the importance of keeping children hydrated and in cool, ventilated spaces, and advises against leaving anyone in parked vehicles exposed to the sun.
In case of emergency, such as intense sweating, fever, vomiting/nausea, or rapid/weak pulse, contact SNS 24 at 808 24 24 24 or the European emergency number 112.
