A tragic incident occurred this Sunday at the Juncal viewpoint in Pico do Areeiro, Madeira, where a Czech tourist, approximately 40 years old, died after falling about 50 meters. The Regional Civil Protection Service (SRPC) was alerted around 10:00 AM and immediately initiated rescue operations.
Rescue efforts were extensive, involving a Civil Protection helicopter and a mountain rescue team from the Madeiran Volunteer Firefighters. Despite the rapid response, the circumstances leading to the fall remain unclear. Authorities confirmed the fall's height and the tourist's nationality, noting that psychological support was provided to a family member present at the scene.
The operation mobilized 20 professionals and four vehicles, alongside the SRPC helicopter. The victim's body was recovered by firefighters at 1:00 PM. The area, overlooking Funchal, also saw the presence of Public Security Police and Forest Police officers.
