Ceremony Details

As part of the City Day celebrations, a special event is scheduled for September 6 at 5:00 PM, featuring the unveiling of a commemorative plaque for Rua José Louro, located near the Teatro das Figuras.

Legacy of José Louro

Born in Coimbra in 1933 and passing away in Faro in 2018, José Luís Louro was a renowned pedagogue, playwright, and director, widely regarded as one of the most influential names in the history of theater in the Algarve. He was a driving force behind theatrical initiatives not only in Faro but across the region, serving as the programmer for the Teatro Lethes in 2001 and as a member of the administration board for the Teatro das Figuras from 2005 to 2009. His deep passion for theater led him to support the establishment of several companies, including SinCera - University Theater Group in 1990 and ACTA - The Algarve Theater Company in 1995.

Recent Initiatives

This symbolic act by the Municipality of Faro follows the creation of the 'José Louro New Dramaturgies Award' in March of this year. This award aims to recognize unpublished dramatic writing in the Portuguese language for theater plays.

Collaborative Efforts

The award emerged from a collaborative initiative involving the Teatro das Figuras, ACTA - The Algarve Theater Company/Teatro Lethes, the CIAC - Research Center in Arts and Communication at the University of the Algarve's Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, in partnership with the Faro City Council, the CET - Theater Studies Center at the University of Lisbon, and the Portuguese Society of Authors. It is sponsored by the companies Grupo Rolear and Metalofarense, with support from Club Farense.
