  • A total of 100 million euros is allocated to cut water distribution losses by 2030, with 1 million euros reserved for immediate action by year-end.

  • Current dam storage in the Algarve is at 72%, a major improvement from 30% last year, but the region remains vulnerable to drought.

  • Urgent works in wildfire-affected areas, including Aljezur-Lagos, aim to retain ashes and prevent water contamination, with protocols for 84 municipalities.

  • The minister emphasized no excuses for delays, citing flexible measures under a recent decree-law to expedite recovery efforts.

Algarve's Water Loss Crisis Addressed with Full Funding

As the new hydrological year approaches, the Algarve region continues to experience high temperatures near 30 degrees Celsius. The severe drought that plagued the area for 12 years until last year remains a looming threat. "The situation in the Algarve is still complex," acknowledged Environment Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho during the signing of a protocol aimed at boosting public support for municipal and other entity projects to improve local water distribution networks.

Increased Financial Support to 100%

Financial assistance for these initiatives has been raised from 60% to 100% through the Environmental Fund. Minister Carvalho emphasized, "At this moment, there are no excuses, mayors. Now it's just work," highlighting that funding shortages will not hinder progress. The investment plan by the Algarve's Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) allocates 100 million euros to reduce water distribution losses by 2030. By the end of this year, one million euros are reserved, though the minister noted that execution will be challenging.

Current Water Reserves and Future Measures

Regarding water reserves, the region's six dams currently hold 72% of their storage capacity, a significant improvement from the 30% available at the same time last year. Aligned with European directives, the Ministry of Environment pledges to enhance support for combating water losses, promoting savings and reuse if necessary.

Additional Initiatives for Burnt Areas

Minister Carvalho also announced that a protocol with 84 municipalities will be signed this Friday to recover areas affected by wildfires, including the recent Aljezur-Lagos fire perimeter. The most urgent works focus on retaining ashes to prevent water contamination and mitigate landslides. Subsequently, protocols will be signed with each protected area impacted by fires to restore infrastructure and vegetation. While public tenders are still required, the minister stated that a decree-law from August provides great flexibility for execution.
