Portuguese Dioceses to Compensate Abuse Victims with €2 Million Fund

Approximately 80 victims of sexual abuse by members of the Catholic Church in Portugal whose compensation requests have been validated will receive an average of €25,000 each in financial compensation.

Compensation Process and Timeline

The amounts will be determined by a special commission created for this purpose, which includes two appellate judges, three lawyers, and two law professors. Payments are expected to begin in mid-2026.

The funds will be guaranteed by a Conference of Bishops fund, to which all twenty Portuguese dioceses will contribute. Total compensation for the victims is estimated to reach around €2 million.

Episcopal Assembly Discussion

The issue will be a topic of debate among bishops who are meeting in a plenary assembly in Fátima from today until Thursday. This marks a significant step in addressing the historical abuse cases within the Portuguese Catholic Church.
