Ecumenical Celebration in Algarve

The Diocese of Algarve is set to commemorate the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity with an ecumenical celebration this Saturday.

Ecumenical Celebration

The Bishop of Algarve, D. Manuel Quintas, is calling for greater openness in dialogue between Catholic communities and other Christian denominations. He emphasized the importance of this week, which runs from January 18 to 25, highlighting the theme for 2025, “Do You Believe This?” This year's observance coincides with the 1700th anniversary of the first Ecumenical Council held in Nicaea, Turkey.

D. Quintas remarked, “The lack of unity is always a counter-witness and a fragility that characterizes us as Churches. It affects our adherence to Christ and our evangelizing mission.”

The diocese will not overlook this week, as it participates in the annual ecumenical celebration at the Church of São Francisco in Faro, where Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherans, Orthodox, and Evangelicals are invited. D. Manuel Quintas noted that this event usually sees good attendance and sharing among the different denominations.

In 2025, the prayers and reflections for the Week of Prayer have been prepared by the Bose Monastic Community from Northern Italy. The national opening celebration will take place on January 18 at 3:30 PM in the Lusitanian Parish of São João Evangelista in Vila Nova de Gaia, Diocese of Porto.
