Bruno Nunes, a member of Chega and councilor in Loures, recently stirred controversy with his proposal regarding municipal housing evictions. He emphasized that the aim of his recommendation was not to penalize entire families and noted that it would be possible to "transfer the ownership of contracts" to other family members, ensuring no one is penalized due to familial association.
A Strong Accusation Against António Costa
In an interview on the program "Sofá do Parlamento," Nunes claimed that the issue gained traction because António Costa wanted to demonstrate to Pedro Nuno Santos what internal opposition looks like, especially following comments made on SIC. He accused the former Prime Minister of xenophobia and racism, stating, "António Costa's letter is xenophobic and racist."
Nunes Eyeing Loures Candidacy
Regarding the upcoming municipal elections, Nunes expressed his desire to run for the Loures City Council. He also mentioned that André Ventura would be a strong candidate anywhere, including for the Lisbon City Council—a possibility that is not entirely ruled out.
On Evictions and Housing Regulations
Nunes discussed the potential changes in Loures' housing regulations, stating his hope that the PS will act on the approved recommendation. He criticized the current system, arguing that evictions should not be arbitrary and must follow clear criteria. He stressed that a family should not be evicted simply because one member committed a crime, emphasizing that the contract should be transferable to another family member.
Balancing Justice and Public Order
Nunes clarified that any sanctions related to public order crimes should not result in collective punishment for families. He argued for a dissuasive measure to ensure that individuals understand the consequences of their actions without punishing innocent family members. He further criticized Costa's statements linking immigration to crime, asserting that Chega does not make such correlations.
A Call for Clear Regulations
He proposed that regulations should clearly define punishable offenses, including vandalism and public order violations, and indicated a willingness to extend these definitions to more serious crimes. Nunes believes that the current lack of clarity allows for unequal enforcement across municipalities and calls for a fair and just approach to housing regulations.
Political Implications
Nunes expressed surprise at the opposition from the PCP party and noted that any reversal of support from Ricardo Leão, the Mayor of Loures, would be politically strange. He stated, "The PS approved a measure that is of the greatest social justice."
