Mário Centeno, the outgoing Governor of the Bank of Portugal, shared his thoughts in an interview following the government's decision not to reappoint him. He emphasized that his performance is open for evaluation and respected the government's prerogative in making such decisions. Centeno revealed that the Finance Minister informed him of the decision without providing a specific justification, only thanking him for his service.
Centeno expressed pride in his tenure, highlighting significant contributions to stabilizing the financial system and enhancing Portugal's international standing. He wished his successor, Álvaro Santos Pereira, well, stating he harbors no personal disappointment over the transition.
Decision on New Headquarters a Collective One Regarding the controversial choice of Entrecampos for the Bank's new headquarters, Centeno clarified it was a collective decision, not his alone. He underscored the project's importance after decades of deliberation and the Bank's unwavering financial rigor in all decisions. The contract with Fidelidade, Portugal's largest insurer, is set at 192 million euros, a figure Centeno insists is exact and non-negotiable.
Centeno also addressed criticisms of his independence and last-minute appointments within the Bank, defending the qualifications and exemplary careers of those involved. He reaffirmed the Bank's role in evaluating Portugal's economic situation, asserting its duty to highlight risks and issue warnings.
