Summary:

  • Chega threatens to vote against the nationality law if PSD does not meet its demands on fundamental values

  • Key demands include automatic loss of nationality for serious crimes, no social support dependence, and no recovery for fraudulent acquisition

  • André Ventura accuses PSD of aligning with PS to bypass Chega, calling it a betrayal of voters

  • Debate on the law postponed for the third time; PSD's Hugo Soares hopes for no more "tantrums" and democratic maturity

  • Iniciativa Liberal proposes 10-year rule for nationality (7 with strict criteria), while Livre seeks more refugee protections

Chega's Ultimatum on Nationality Law

In a press conference at the party's headquarters in Lisbon, André Ventura made it clear that Chega will not support the nationality law "if there is no agreement" on what he calls "fundamental values."

Key Demands from Chega

Ventura emphasized several non-negotiable points:

  • Automatic loss of nationality for those convicted of serious crimes
  • Applicants for nationality must not depend on social support
  • Those who obtain nationality fraudulently should not be able to recover it

Ongoing Negotiations and Political Tensions

Ventura revealed that negotiations will continue tonight, expressing hope for a compromise. He stated that Chega has already accepted "many things" and expects the PSD to show "some concession."

He accused the PSD of aligning with the PS to bypass Chega's demands, suggesting this is a betrayal of their electoral promises and voters. Ventura dismissed claims that Chega's stance is a "political tantrum," insisting it is a matter of core values.

Delays in Parliamentary Debate

The detailed discussion of the nationality law was postponed for the third time on Thursday at the PSD's request. Hugo Soares, the PSD's parliamentary leader, justified the delay by stating the need for "conversations to find solutions" and achieve broad consensus.

Soares commented, "I hope there are no more tantrums and that there is democratic maturity for this law to see the light of day," emphasizing that the PSD does not publicize ongoing negotiations between parliamentary groups.

New Debate Schedule and Other Party Proposals

The debate is now scheduled for Friday at 9:00 AM. The previous delays allowed the Iniciativa Liberal and Livre to submit their proposals:

  • Iniciativa Liberal advocates for a general rule of ten years for obtaining Portuguese nationality, reduced to seven for applicants meeting stricter criteria.
  • Livre seeks enhanced protection for refugees and their children.
