The Ministry of Finance has directed the General Inspectorate of Finance (IGF) to conduct an audit on the construction of the new Bank of Portugal building in Entrecampos, Lisbon. This decision comes amid concerns that the project's costs may exceed the initially estimated 192 million euros. The move was prompted by recent reports highlighting "high-risk" warnings associated with the project's execution.
The Bank of Portugal, led by Mário Centeno, asserts that all relevant documentation has been available to the Ministry for months. However, the Ministry claims it only had access to partial information, as the Bank allegedly withheld historical data. This development marks another chapter in the ongoing tension between Finance Minister Joaquim Miranda Sarmento and the Bank's governor.
