Rising Temperatures and Yellow Warnings
Temperatures are set to rise again this week, potentially reaching 38 degrees Celsius in several regions of Portugal. The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued a yellow warning for five districts due to persistent heat and an increased risk of wildfires.
Affected Districts and Regions
From 12 PM on Tuesday to 6 PM on Wednesday, the districts of Évora, Beja, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, and Guarda will be under a yellow warning because of high maximum temperatures. Additionally, a yellow warning is in effect for the south coast of Madeira Island, valid from 9 AM on Tuesday to 9 PM on Wednesday.
High Fire Danger Areas
Eight municipalities are currently at maximum fire risk: Vimioso, Miranda do Douro, and Mogadouro in Bragança; Tomar in Santarém; Portalegre, Castelo de Vide, and Marvão in Portalegre; and Tavira in Faro. The IPMA warns that many other municipalities in the interior North, Center, and Algarve are at very high risk, with conditions expected to worsen from Wednesday as temperatures climb.
Temperature Forecasts
Maximum temperatures will range from 22°C in Viana do Castelo to 35°C in Castelo Branco, with peaks of 38°C possible in the interior Alentejo, Tagus Valley, Lisbon, and some parts of the North and Center. Minimum temperatures will be between 12°C (in Guarda) and 20°C (in Faro).
Weather and Fire Index Details
The fire danger index, based on air temperature, relative humidity, wind, and precipitation over the last 24 hours, has five levels from reduced to maximum. For today, the forecast calls for mostly clear skies with some morning cloudiness on the North and Center coasts. Wind may become strong along the western coastal strip in the afternoon.
