A Controversial Figure in Government
Hélder Rosalino, who will take over as the new Secretary-General of the Government on January 1, 2024, has been a prominent figure in Portuguese politics, particularly known for his role in implementing austerity measures during the Passos Coelho administration.
Rosalino, who will earn a salary exceeding 15,000 euros, has been an influential player since he became Secretary of State in 2011, marking his entry into the political arena. His tenure is marked by significant austerity measures during the time of the Troika, a period that saw strict fiscal policies aimed at stabilizing the Portuguese economy.
After two years in office, Rosalino left the government in late 2013, shortly after the resignation of Vítor Gaspar, the then Minister of Finance. His departure came amid ongoing challenges in addressing pension deficits and other economic issues that plagued the administration.
Rosalino's upcoming role is anticipated to shape the direction of public administration in Portugal, continuing the legacy of austerity that has defined much of the recent political landscape.
