Lisbon Airport faced significant disruptions today, with 36 flights canceled due to a strike by SPdH/Menzies workers (formerly Groundforce). According to a union source, 22 departures and 14 arrivals were affected, plunging the airport into chaos.
Carlos Araújo, a leader from the Metal and Related Industries Union (SIMA), described the scene as 'a real chaos', highlighting not just the cancellations but also delays and baggage handling issues. He warned that it could take at least a week to normalize baggage operations.
The union is calling for a worker concentration on Monday at 10:00 at Humberto Delgado International Airport's building 70, urging participation with the message: 'Fight for your rights. Fight for your future. Together we are stronger.'
This strike, initiated by SIMA and the Transport Union, began at 00:00 on Friday and will continue until 24:00 on Monday. It marks the first of five planned four-day strikes stretching into early September, with dates set for August 8-11, 15-18, 22-25, and 29-August to 1-September.
Workers are demanding an end to base salaries below the national minimum wage, payment for night hours, better wage conditions, and maintained access to parking facilities under previous terms.
