A 29-year-old woman was rescued after being swept away by a strong current in Cacela Velha, an unmonitored bathing area in Vila Real de Santo António, Faro district. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, prompting the National Maritime Authority (AMN) to reiterate its warning against swimming in the area.
Rescue Operation
The woman encountered difficulties while crossing the Ria Formosa and needed assistance. She was quickly rescued by the SeaWatch project team and brought to shore, where she remained safe and did not require medical attention.
Authorities' Warning
The AMN has strongly advised against bathing in Cacela Velha due to the dangers posed by strong currents. Despite the warnings, the area sees a high influx of visitors. Commander Afonso Martins, captain of the Port of Vila Real de Santo António, emphasized to TSF that Cacela Velha is not a beach and should not be treated as such.
