Lisbon Joins Global Peace Initiative

On International Peace Day, September 21, the city of Lisbon will participate in the Essays for Peace movement, an artistic project by Argentine artist Martín Bonadeo. The initiative encourages replacing all possible screens with the image of a lit candle to promote global solidarity and tranquility.

Essays for Peace

In its first edition, over 20,000 candles were displayed on advertising screens worldwide, from New York to Barcelona. This year, the project aims to reach even more people by involving public and private screens of all sizes.

How to Participate

To join, simply download the video of a lit candle from the official link and play it on any device—such as a phone, tablet, TV, or digital panel—starting at midnight on September 21. You can meditate in silence, listen to relaxing music, and share your experience on social media using the hashtags #EnsayosParaLaPaz and #EssaysForPeace.

Locations in Portugal

Events are planned in cities including Braga, Póvoa do Varzim, Maia, Porto, Penafiel, Vila Real, Aveiro, Coimbra, Leiria, Cascais, Amadora, Lisbon, and Almada. In Lisbon, key spots include Santa Apolónia station, Cais do Sodré, and Praça do Município. Digital screens will be set up across the city; check the global map for exact locations.

The movement transcends languages and cultures, with each flame symbolizing a soul seeking peace. Last year, it reached millions through unexpected venues like cinemas and offices, with special musical accompaniments in places like Valencia.
