Portugal’s government has introduced stricter immigration measures, significantly extending the time required for foreigners to obtain citizenship. Previously set at five years, the new rules now require up to 10 years of residency for most applicants.
Key Changes in Citizenship Requirements
- Individuals from Portuguese-speaking countries (such as Brazil and Angola) will now need to wait seven years to apply for citizenship.
- Other foreigners will face an even longer wait, with the residency requirement doubled to ten years.
This decision was announced by Presidency Minister Antonio Leitao Amaro following a cabinet meeting, marking a significant shift in Portugal’s immigration policy.
