The Portuguese government has announced significant changes to the nationality law, focusing on stricter immigration controls and integration requirements. The Council of Ministers meeting, led by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, outlined three main axes for the revision of the nationality law.
Increased Residency Requirement The government plans to extend the minimum residency period for obtaining Portuguese citizenship, currently set at five years. This move aims to ensure a stronger connection between applicants and the country.
Family Reunification Limits While not suspending family reunification entirely, the government will limit it based on the capacity of public services and Portuguese society's integration capabilities. This adjustment seeks to balance family rights with societal integration.
Stricter Immigration Rules The revision includes tighter entry rules for immigrants and stricter compliance requirements for foreign nationals. Additionally, the government will expand scenarios where nationality can be revoked, particularly for serious criminal behaviors.
Emphasis on Cultural Integration A key focus is reinforcing the "effective connection" applicants must demonstrate, including understanding and integrating into Portuguese culture, civic, and social habits. This underscores the government's commitment to a more regulated and controlled immigration policy.
Work Visa Restrictions The government intends to restrict work-seeking visas to highly qualified candidates and may introduce Portuguese language proficiency criteria for residency permit renewals.
Residency Certificate Reform A centralized system for issuing residency certificates will be created, introducing limits on testimonies and per property to streamline the process.
Support for Voluntary Return The "Bom Regresso" program will support immigrants wishing to return to their home countries but unable to do so independently, reflecting a humane approach to immigration management.
The press conference following the Council of Ministers meeting is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
