The dream of space launches from Portugal's Açores is now a reality. After a lengthy process filled with delays, the Atlantic Spaceport Consortium (ASC), a Portuguese company, has finally received the green light. This marks the first time a license has been granted for operating a space launch center on Portuguese soil.
Located in Malbusca, on the southern part of Santa Maria Island in the Açores, the spaceport is set to begin operations with its first flight scheduled for May 2026. This milestone not only positions Portugal on the global space exploration map but also promises to boost the local economy and technological advancements in the region.

The five-year license allows ASC to proceed with its ambitious plans, which have been in the works since the application was submitted in December of the previous year. The project has faced numerous hurdles, but the perseverance of the consortium and the support from local and national authorities have paved the way for this groundbreaking achievement.
