Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has publicly condemned a neonazi attack targeting actors from the theater group "A Barraca" in Lisbon. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday night, resulted in one actor requiring hospital treatment after being violently assaulted.
In a statement on the Presidency's website, Rebelo de Sousa emphasized that "we live in Democracy and do not want to return to dictatorship". He expressed his solidarity with Maria do Céu Guerra, the director of the play, and the entire company, reaffirming the importance of freedom of thought and expression in a democratic society.
The attacked actor, Adérito Lopes, was on his way to perform when he was struck with a brass knuckle, sustaining facial injuries that required stitches. Maria do Céu Guerra believes the attack was politically motivated. The PSP has identified a 20-year-old suspect, but no arrests have been made yet.
