Lisbon's vibrant Popular Marches once again took to the streets to celebrate Santo António, the city's beloved patron saint known for blessing marriages. The event was a spectacle of music, dance, color, and joy, transforming Avenida da Liberdade into a festive stage on the night of June 12, 2025.
A Night of Celebration
The marches, a traditional highlight of Lisbon's festive calendar, brought together communities from across the city. Each group showcased their unique costumes and choreographies, competing not just for prizes but for the honor of keeping this cherished tradition alive.
Santo António's Legacy
Santo António, often referred to as the matchmaker saint, plays a central role in Lisbon's cultural and religious life. The marches are just one part of a larger celebration that includes street parties, grilled sardines, and weddings—many of which are sponsored by the city in honor of the saint.
The event was a reminder of Lisbon's rich cultural heritage and the importance of community in keeping traditions vibrant. Despite the challenges of organizing such a large-scale event, the spirit of Santo António prevailed, bringing smiles and laughter to all who attended.
