Election Repeat Confirms Second PS Councilor in Monção
The repetition of municipal elections this Sunday in the parish of Lara, Monção, broke the tie from the October 12 results, giving victory to the "Juntos Por Lara (JPL)" movement, led by 40-year-old nurse Pedro Ribeiro, by a margin of nine votes. This also confirmed the election of a second councilor for the Socialist Party (PS) in the Monção City Council.

The municipality is led by António Barbosa of the PSD, who secured six mandates in the first round, while the PS elected one. With the votes from Lara, the composition of the municipal executive now shifts to 5-2 in favor of the PSD.
PSD Secures Victory in Cabreiro After Initial Tie
In Cabreiro, Arcos de Valdevez, the PSD won the parish council after tying with the "Todos Por Cabreiro" candidacy two weeks earlier, with 120 votes each. Durval Botelho, a 49-year-old construction worker, was elected president of the parish council, winning by six votes over the opposing list. In both cases, voter turnout was higher than in the initial elections.
Higher Voter Turnout and Mobilization
Pedro Ribeiro commented to JN: "Turnout was higher. People mobilized. After the tie, they came to us expressing their intention to vote for us because they believed in our project." In Lara, 194 voters cast their ballots—98 for JPL and 89 for the PSD. The election repeat in Lara was ordered due to a complaint from a voter in the previous election and applied to all municipal bodies.
In Cabreiro, the PSD received 131 votes, and "Todos Por Cabreiro" got 125. The winning list is led by the treasurer of the outgoing executive, who will now become parish council president. Durval Botelho noted: "The first time was an unpleasant and unprecedented situation because we expected to win in the first round, but we were surprised by the tie. This time, we went to work and achieved our goal, which was to win. More people mobilized, and there was more participation because everyone wanted to break the tie."
