Álvaro Santos Pereira, the incoming governor of the Banco de Portugal, is set to receive a €4,000 monthly increase compared to his previous salary as the chief economist at the OECD. This adjustment brings his gross monthly salary to €19,496.39 upon his return to Portugal from Paris, France.
This salary hike comes after the Banco de Portugal's board of directors approved the largest salary increase on record (7.26%) earlier this year. For the governor's position, this resulted in an additional €1,319.21 per month.
Pereira, who previously served as a minister under Passos Coelho, is stepping into a role that not only marks a significant career advancement but also highlights the competitive compensation packages offered by Portugal's central bank to attract top talent from international organizations.
