In a surprising turn of events, Chega has emerged victorious in several key emigrant regions during the latest legislative elections, including France, the UK, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, and notably Brazil. This marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Portugal's diaspora votes.
The Democratic Alliance (AD) secured the majority of votes in most countries within the 'Outside Europe' constituency. However, Brazil stood out as an exception, where Chega claimed the top spot. This outcome has led to Chega and AD each gaining two additional deputies in the Assembly of the Republic, while the Socialist Party (PS) failed to secure any seats in these constituencies for the first time.
This election underscores the changing dynamics within Portugal's political scene, especially among its emigrant communities. The results reflect a growing inclination towards Chega's far-right policies in certain regions, challenging the traditional dominance of centrist and left-wing parties.
