Francisco Calheiros, president of the Confederação do Turismo de Portugal (CTP), has expressed confidence in the government's negotiation process for the privatization of TAP Air Portugal, emphasizing that the sale will be at a fair market price. He doubts the airline's valuation at 3.2 billion euros but insists this shouldn't halt privatization.
Calheiros highlights TAP's resilience through Covid-19, now being profitable and well-managed, making it an ideal time for privatization. He argues that TAP cannot survive alone against giants like Lufthansa and British Airways, advocating for its integration into a larger European platform.
The privatization process, expected to conclude by July 2026, is seen as a positive step. Calheiros advises the government to consider the strategic importance of Lisbon's Hub in the deal, crucial for maintaining competitive advantages in tourism.
The final decision will undergo scrutiny by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Competition (DGComp), ensuring compliance with EU regulations.
