The Dominance of Tuna in Portugal's Canned Fish Sector
Tuna is the most produced preserve in Portugal, accounting for nearly 50% of the total in the canned fish sector. It is also the most exported canned product, highlighting its significance in the national economy.
According to a report by ANICP – National Association of Fish Canned Industry, national production of canned fish reached €468 million in 2022, with a volume of 80,000 tons. This marks an impressive 28% increase in value and 25% in quantity compared to 2021.
Economic Impact of Tuna
Tuna alone generated €209 million, representing 45% of the sector's total. Other important products such as sardines, crustaceans, and molluscs also contribute significantly to the industry. Notably, over 60% of the production is aimed at export, totaling €334 million last year, reflecting a 10% increase from the previous year.
Spain and France are the leading export destinations, accounting for 29% and 24% of the exported volume, respectively. The USA stands out in terms of sales price, with €9.1 per kg, followed closely by Italy at €8.5.
Import and Labor Challenges
In 2022, Portugal imported €289 million in canned goods, totaling 67,000 tons, marking an 8% increase in value and 6% in quantity. More than half of these imports are canned tuna, primarily sourced from Spain (59%). The operating costs for the sector were €384 million.
However, ANICP reported that the sector is facing challenges in hiring local labor, necessitating strategies for talent attraction and retention.
