João Maria Jonet, a well-known political commentator and consultant, has officially announced his independent candidacy for the Cascais City Council. The announcement will take place on June 25 at Marechal Carmona Park in Cascais.

Jonet, who has expressed his intention to run in this year's local elections for months, shared with Público his reasons for stepping into the race. He criticizes the main center parties, PSD and PS, for being "hollow" and losing touch with civil society. "I decided to run because politics needs more participation and renewal," Jonet stated, highlighting the 24 years of the same coalition in power in Cascais as a period that has led to many "vices" and a disconnect from the original project.

He also pointed out the need for Cascais to better respect its natural heritage and to offer more than just luxury construction projects. Jonet aims to make the municipality a place where his generation can live and work, criticizing the current focus on turning Cascais into a tourist destination sold off to real estate investment funds.

Jonet will run against Nuno Piteira Lopes (supported by PSD), João Ruivo (PS candidate), and Carlos Rabaçal (CDU's choice). At 27, Jonet will leave the PSD, where he previously worked on Jorge Moreira da Silva's leadership campaign and the "Novos Tempos" coalition led by Carlos Moedas for the Lisbon City Council.
