The PCP and Livre have called on the Portuguese government to clarify the use of the Lajes Base in the Azores by the United States, especially in light of recent attacks on Iran. The parties are questioning whether the Portuguese government was informed about the purpose of this use and if it can guarantee that the aircraft passing through were not used in the attacks.
The presence of 12 US aircraft at the Lajes Base was reported by Lusa last Friday, prompting questions from the BE to the Prime Minister about the sudden increase in the base's usage by the US Air Force. José Luís Carneiro, the sole candidate for PS leadership, also suggested that the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense explain the aircraft's presence.
Luís Montenegro, reacting to the attack on Iran via social media, expressed concerns over the Iranian nuclear program's threat to global security but did not mention the Lajes Base. Meanwhile, André Ventura of Chega echoed Montenegro's stance on Iran's nuclear ambitions.
PCP, Livre, and BE Seek Explanations
The PCP has condemned any potential use of the Lajes Base by the US for escalating aggression against Iran, warning against Portugal's involvement. The party highlighted the base's historical role in US military actions and posed three critical questions to the government regarding its use and Portugal's stance on international aggression.
Livre emphasized Portugal's role as a voice for peace and dialogue, urging the government to clarify its position on the US attacks on Iran and the use of Portuguese territory in such operations. The party also questioned the government's stance on increasing military spending and its strategy for acquiring military equipment.
The BE's sole deputy criticized the US and Israel's plans in the Middle East, calling on Portugal to condemn these actions and prevent the use of US bases on national soil for such purposes.
