The Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML) is setting its sights on becoming one of Europe's most innovative regions, with a newly presented 3-Year Innovation Strategy. This ambitious plan aims to create a unique brand for the sector, fostering collaboration among its 18 municipalities to present a unified vision both nationally and internationally.

Developed by the NOVA Information Management School (NOVA IMS) in collaboration with AML and its municipalities, the strategy is designed to be implemented with a budget under one million euros, emphasizing political will over resources. Vítor dos Santos, the project coordinator, highlighted the importance of a governance model and a digital platform for sharing solutions across municipalities.
Current innovation hubs like the Unicorn Factory in Lisbon, Almada Innovation District, and Startup Barreiro showcase the region's potential. However, the strategy seeks to integrate these efforts under a metropolitan brand, enhancing international recognition and leveraging the area's symbolic capital, such as its estuaries and cultural richness.
Key initiatives include:
- Developing territorial marketing
- Improving innovation support infrastructures
- Creating tourism-innovation routes
Carlos Humberto de Carvalho, AML's first metropolitan secretary, emphasized the strategy's role in promoting sustainable growth and improving quality of life, calling it a milestone in collective commitment to innovation.
The strategy's presentation at the Beato Innovation District gathered 80 guests, marking a significant step towards realizing Lisbon's vision as a leading innovative region.
