Rui Tavares, the spokesperson for Livre, expressed strong opposition to the planned removal of jacarandas on Avenida 5 de Outubro in Lisbon, stating that we cannot sacrifice what is beautiful, good, and practical in our city for the interests of a real estate developer. During a protest advocating for the trees, Tavares emphasized the importance of urban beauty for a free society, linking it to health benefits and environmental quality. He highlighted the stark contrast experienced during summer between the shaded Avenida 5 de Outubro and the sun-exposed Avenida das Forças Armadas, which lacks trees and greenery.
Tavares criticized Lisbon's Mayor Carlos Moedas for failing to resist the pressure from developers, arguing that replacing mature trees with new ones in a parking lot would not offer the same benefits in terms of shade and comfort. He pointed out that the jacarandas have historical significance, as they have adorned this avenue since the late 19th century.
In response to the growing public concern, the Lisbon City Council (CML) recently began planting new jacarandas and postponed a public meeting due to high interest. Currently, there are 75 jacarandas on the avenue, with plans to keep 30, transplant 20, and remove 25. However, 39 new jacarandas and 49 other trees will be planted in the area. The CML claims that they have managed to save 50 of the trees initially marked for removal, alongside a commitment to plant an additional 200 jacarandas throughout Lisbon.
The controversy arises from the construction of an underground parking facility as part of the urban development project in Entrecampos, located on the former site of the Feira Popular. A petition titled 'No to the cutting down of jacarandas on Av. 5 de Outubro' has garnered over 53,250 signatures, demonstrating public discontent. Following a meeting with city officials, petitioners expressed frustration over the lack of willingness to modify the project plans.
