Gradual Restart of Operations
Portugal's Galp is set to gradually restart units at its Sines oil refinery over the coming days. This decision comes in the wake of a significant Iberian power outage that forced the company to suspend operations on Monday. A spokesperson for Galp confirmed this update, emphasizing the importance of the refinery's operations.
Impact Across the Iberian Peninsula
The power outage not only affected Galp's refinery but also led to similar actions across Spain. Oil refineries operated by Repsol, Moeve, and Petronor announced they were beginning to restart operations on Tuesday, following the blackout that brought both Portugal and Spain to a standstill.
Restoration of Power
By Tuesday, power was restored to the Iberian peninsula, marking the end of the worst blackout in the region's history. The cause of this extensive power failure remains unclear. In response to the situation, the Portuguese government reported that electricity supplies have been normalized for all 6.4 million electricity clients in the country.
Sines Refinery Details
The Sines refinery, which boasts a crude processing capacity of 225,000 barrels per day, is Galp's only remaining operational oil refinery, following the closure of its smaller facility in Matosinhos near Porto in 2021.
