Who's Who in the FAUL Race
Carla Tavares, a prominent socialist MEP and former president of the Amadora City Council, is weighing a bid for leadership of the PS federation in Greater Lisbon (FAUL). With over a decade of political experience, Tavares is under pressure to run due to her extensive background, yet her current role in Brussels raises questions about her availability. Sources indicate that she might not be entirely out of the race, with expectations that ultimately, two candidates will emerge: Miguel Prata Roque and another contender.
Tavares's candidacy faces hurdles, primarily her commitment in Brussels since her election as an MEP. Critics within the party express concerns about leading from abroad, suggesting it may not resonate well with local constituents. Meanwhile, Pedro Pinto de Jesus, who has acted as interim leader during transitions, is also vying for the position. Both candidates have pledged mutual support, regardless of who ultimately advances.
Currently, there is no consensus on which candidate is best suited for the role, highlighting a divide on whether experience or a fresh perspective is more critical for the FAUL's future.
In a recent political committee meeting, Filipe Costa, former head of AICEP, announced his intention to run, emphasizing the urgency of addressing local elections. Costa believes the PS must establish a clear coalition strategy for Lisbon and surrounding areas and insists that multiple candidacies reflect a vitality of internal democracy within the party.
Miguel Prata Roque, a newcomer to the federation, is facing challenges in garnering support. He advocates for an open party and has successfully pushed for elections to be held on January 10, as opposed to mid-December, allowing more time for member engagement. Although he sought a broader congress, the elections will only fill the presidency role, a decision previously validated by Portugal's Constitutional Court. Roque remains committed to organizing a general assembly in February to discuss strategic directions and policy frameworks for urban and municipal governance.
