The second day of the drivers' strike in the Autonomous Region of Madeira saw a significant impact, particularly at SIGA Rodoeste. The Regional Government reported a higher participation rate among the company's drivers, with around 35% joining the strike over the two days.
Horários do Funchal also experienced notable participation, with 40 out of 64 scheduled drivers striking yesterday and 46 today, marking a 33.5% participation rate. In contrast, CAM, another public transport provider, saw minimal strike adherence, ensuring normal operations.
The National Union of Drivers and Other Workers (SNMOT), which organized the strike, views the action as a "resounding success" with a "quite positive effect" for the professionals. Union leader Manuel Oliveira emphasized the strike's goal wasn't about participation percentages but about reaching a mature consensus on workers' demands, including salary adjustments reflecting the regional minimum wage increase.
Negotiations are set to continue, with the union planning meetings with the ACIF, representing private transport companies, and Horários do Funchal, including the regional secretariat overseeing the public company. The outcome of these talks will determine whether a pre-announced strike on July 20th, coinciding with a major PSD event, will proceed.
Oliveira expressed confidence in reaching an agreement with ACIF but remained cautious about negotiations with the Regional Government, criticizing its approach and highlighting the constructive stance of the ACIF and Horários do Funchal's administration.
