Fresh searches are set to begin in Portugal as part of the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, nearly 18 years after she vanished from the Algarve. The searches, requested by German police, will focus on an area between Praia da Luz and the residence of Christian Brueckner, the prime suspect in the case.
Brueckner, currently serving a prison sentence in Germany for a separate crime, has denied any involvement in Madeleine's disappearance. The operation, scheduled from June 2 to 6 in the municipality of Lagos, involves collaboration between Portuguese and German authorities. This marks the first significant search in Portugal in over two years, following a previous operation near a remote dam in 2023.
Madeleine McCann was last seen on May 3, 2007, while on holiday with her family in Praia da Luz. Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, have expressed their unwavering determination to continue the search for their daughter, describing her as "beautiful and unique" on the 18th anniversary of her disappearance.
The investigation aims to uncover possible traces of Madeleine's body, with any evidence found to be handed over to the German federal police. The Metropolitan Police Service has stated its support for the international effort, though it will not be directly involved in the searches.
In a related development, the UK government recently approved additional funding for the investigation, underscoring the ongoing commitment to solving this high-profile case.
