A devastating fire broke out on Tuesday in a building on Elias Garcia Avenue in Lisbon, leading to two injuries and rendering the building uninhabitable. The fire, which started on the second floor, quickly spread to upper floors due to the building's old structure and wooden elements, according to Alexandre Rodrigues, commander of the Regimental Firefighters (RSB).

The aftermath saw the building's rear completely collapsed, with officials declaring it 'totally uninhabitable.' Two residents were injured: a 93-year-old woman from smoke inhalation and her 57-year-old daughter, who suffered an anxiety attack. Both were taken to Santa Maria Hospital.

Residents from the 4th and 5th floors found alternative accommodation on their own, while those from the 2nd floor were housed by the Santa Casa da Misericórdia. The elderly woman and her daughter from the 3rd floor will stay in a hotel post-hospital discharge.

The fire, reported at 17:42, was confined to the building but prompted the evacuation of neighboring structures as a precaution. By 20:00, the fire was under control, and by 20:30, it was declared extinguished. Thirty-four firefighters with 15 vehicles, along with teams from the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM), Municipal Civil Protection Service, and PSP, battled the blaze.

Traffic was halted on part of the avenue to facilitate firefighting operations near the Hotel Capital Lisboa.
