Main Suspect in Madeleine McCann Case Released from Prison
According to international press reports, Christian Brückner, the prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in 2007 from Praia da Luz in the Algarve, was released from prison in Germany this Wednesday. He had served a sentence for rape in another case.
German prosecutor Christian Wolters, who was unable to prevent the release due to insufficient evidence to secure charges in the 'Maddie' case, expressed concern in a recent interview with AFP news agency. He described Brückner as a 'fundamentally dangerous individual' and highlighted worries about his freedom.
Brückner is now free but must comply with strict conditions: he is required to report regularly to authorities, surrender his passport, and wear an electronic monitoring bracelet.
The German prosecution believes that the 48-year-old suspect is responsible for the death of the English child in the Algarve, although the case has never been resolved, and no body has been found.
Madeleine McCann disappeared from an apartment in a tourist village in Aldeia da Luz, Algarve, on May 3, 2007, while she was sleeping with her two-year-old twin siblings. Her parents were dining with friends at the time.
In 2020, German police declared Brückner the main suspect in the alleged kidnapping and presumed murder of the child, but no formal charges have been filed.
