  • Current Garcia de Orta Hospital space is insufficient for birth volumes, requiring infrastructure investment.

  • Barreiro Hospital remains important, with efforts to sustain its resources and contributions.

The Portuguese government has announced plans to construct a new maternal-child center in the Setúbal Peninsula, with Health Minister Ana Paula Martins revealing that a public tender for the project will be launched in 2026. This center is designed to operate 24/7 at the Garcia de Orta Hospital in Almada, supported by the Hospital de Setúbal.

In the short term, emergency obstetric services will be concentrated in Almada to address immediate needs. Minister Martins emphasized that the current facilities at Garcia de Orta Hospital are insufficient to handle the region's high number of births, necessitating significant investment in infrastructure.

Regarding the Barreiro Hospital, she acknowledged its importance and ongoing efforts to maintain resources, ensuring it continues to contribute as it has historically. The strategy includes keeping the Garcia de Orta's obstetric emergency always open and the Setúbal facility at least in contingency mode, with a regional emergency service being prioritized to consolidate medical teams.
