A severe wildfire that broke out in Alandroal, Baixo Alentejo, on Tuesday morning remained uncontrolled until late afternoon, threatening the local village and several homes. By nightfall, nearly 400 emergency personnel, supported by over 130 ground vehicles, were combating the flames.
Maria Rosado, the commander of Relief Operations, reported that the fire was still active by 9 PM. She assured that no large populated areas were under immediate threat, but some isolated and scattered "montes" (rural settlements) were of concern.
The firefighting efforts were hampered by constantly shifting wind direction and speed, exacerbating the situation with multiple ignitions—approximately 40 fire spots spread across a 20-kilometer area. Accessibility to these spots also posed significant challenges.
João Grilo, the mayor of Alandroal, revealed that nearly two-thirds of the municipality were affected by the fire. The blaze was sparked by a metal piece from a heavy goods vehicle along the National Road 255, causing dozens of ignitions. The driver has been identified and is under investigation by the GNR, with the case forwarded to the Public Ministry.
Three firefighters sustained minor injuries during the operation. Authorities hope the fire's intensity will diminish with expected weather changes overnight.
