Nelson de Matos, a towering figure in the Portuguese publishing world, has passed away at the age of 79. He died this Sunday at the Hospital Lusíadas in Lisbon, as confirmed by his family to PÚBLICO.
De Matos was at the helm of Dom Quixote, one of Portugal's most prestigious publishing houses, for decades. Under his leadership, the company published works by some of the country's most celebrated authors, including José Cardoso Pires, António Lobo Antunes, and Lídia Jorge. His career in publishing began at Arcádia and Moraes before he took over Dom Quixote following Snu Abecassis.
His contribution to the Portuguese literary scene was immense, shaping the careers of many authors and bringing Portuguese literature to a wider audience. The loss of Nelson de Matos marks the end of an era for the publishing industry in Portugal.
