Ney Matogrosso, the iconic Brazilian musician, is set to be one of the highlights at this year's Queer Lisboa Festival, taking place from September 19 to 27 at Cinema São Jorge and the Portuguese Cinematheque. The festival boasts an extensive program centered around LGBTQIA+ themes, featuring films and documentaries that explore love, identity, and resistance.
Homem com H: A Candid Look at Ney Matogrosso's Life
One of the standout films is 'Homem com H', directed by Esmir Filho. This documentary offers an unfiltered glimpse into the life of Ney Matogrosso, now 83, who insisted that 'everything told must be true'. The film delves into his complex relationship with his strict military father, his rise to fame during Brazil's dictatorship, and his passionate love affairs, including his tumultuous relationship with fellow musician Cazuza.
A Festival of Diversity and Activism
The 29th edition of Queer Lisboa will also showcase:
- 'Tese Sobre uma Domesticação' by Argentine director Javier van de Couter, starring trans writer Camila Sosa Villada.
- 'My Boyfriend el Fascista', an Italian documentary by Matthias Lintner, exploring his relationship with boyfriend Sadiel Gonzalez.
- 'Peter Hujar’s Day', an intimate film by Ira Sachs based on Linda Rosenkrantz's book.
The festival will pay tribute to Lionel Soukaz, a pioneering LGBTQIA+ activist and filmmaker from France who passed away in February at 71.
