Immigration Law Compliance
Pedro Nuno Santos, leader of the Socialist Party, addressed the recent notification by AIMA that 4,574 immigrants must voluntarily leave Portugal by the end of the month. He stated, "The law is obviously meant to be followed, and it should be followed by everyone." Despite this, he emphasized that the percentage of immigrants in illegal situations is quite low and affirmed the need for the state to invest in integration policies.
Integration and Public Services
Santos highlighted that the management of immigration should focus on integration investments, warning that "the worst outcome for those living here and those coming to work in Portugal is a country that fails to adapt to an increasing population." He noted that the pressure on public services has increased and stressed that state investments should ensure that healthcare, education, and housing are equipped to handle the influx of foreign workers.
Political Instability Concerns
On the topic of Spinumviva, Santos criticized the intertwining of politics and personal business, calling it "unacceptable for a Prime Minister" and claiming it has led to political instability in Portugal. He pointed out that Luís Montenegro, the leader of the opposition, delayed the submission of client data, which he deemed "unacceptable".
Upcoming Elections and Economic Concerns
As the elections approach on the 18th, Santos expressed confidence that the Portuguese public understands the Socialist Party's messages, despite polls favoring the AD. He criticized these polls for consistently underestimating the Socialist Party's electoral results, stating, "What matters is the vote." He urged voters to choose the Socialist Party as the "only way to defeat the AD." Santos warned of economic uncertainty, labeling the AD's economic scenarios as "a fantasy and a deceit."
Commitment to Stability and Defense
Santos reassured that if the Socialist Party wins, they will engage with all parties except Chega, aiming to establish political stability. He reiterated the commitment to allocate 2% of GDP for defense, while ensuring it does not compromise the social state.
Healthcare and Housing Concerns
He acknowledged the need for more medical school slots while emphasizing the importance of improving career conditions in healthcare. Regarding rental caps proposed by the Left Bloc, Santos warned that while it might temporarily lower prices, it could lead to landlords withdrawing properties from the rental market, exacerbating the housing crisis.
Criticism of Government Response to Power Outage
Finally, Santos criticized the government's handling of a recent power outage in the Iberian Peninsula, stating that "this government has not adequately managed crises." He accused them of failing to activate the National Civil Planning and Emergency System and noted that the situation was salvaged only due to the efforts of REN in restoring power quickly.
