Portugal's Planned Expulsion of Foreigners
LISBON, Portugal — In a bold and controversial announcement, Portugal's caretaker government has declared its intention to expel approximately 18,000 foreigners living in the country without authorization. This decision, revealed by Minister of the Presidency António Leitão Amaro, comes in the midst of preparations for a national election scheduled for May 18.
The center-right government plans to issue about 18,000 notifications to individuals illegally residing in Portugal, prompting them to leave. The process is set to commence next week, with 4,500 foreigners being asked to leave voluntarily within a 20-day period.
This announcement follows Prime Minister Luis Montenegro's call for an early general election, prompted by a loss of confidence vote in Parliament, which led to his conservative Social Democratic Party stepping down.
Portugal is not alone in facing these immigration challenges, as it finds itself amid a rising tide of populism in Europe, exemplified by the far-right Chega party, which gained significant traction in last year's elections.
