Portugal is on high alert as the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) issues an orange warning for hot weather across the mainland, with the Algarve being the only exception, under a yellow warning. The institute warns that the upcoming heat episode, expected to last until August 6, "should be particularly severe" due to its duration and the high temperatures forecasted.
Temperatures to Soar
From Sunday, temperatures are expected to range between 36ÂșC and 40ÂșC, with some coastal areas being slightly cooler. SantarĂ©m could see highs of 44ÂșC, while Aveiro might be the coolest at 28ÂșC. The interior regions of Alentejo, the Tagus valley, and the Douro valley are predicted to experience the most extreme conditions, with temperatures between 41ÂșC and 44ÂșC.
Tropical Nights Ahead
Starting Monday, tropical nights are expected, with minimum temperatures not dropping below 20ÂșC to 25ÂșC, making it difficult to find relief from the heat.
Health Advisory
The Direção-Geral da SaĂșde (DGS) has reiterated the importance of staying hydrated, seeking cool environments, and avoiding direct sun exposure, especially between 11 AM and 5 PM. Special attention should be given to vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses.
