Severe Weather Warning in Portugal
The districts of Aveiro, Braga, Coimbra, Porto, and Viana do Castelo will be under a red warning starting at 12:00 PM on Monday due to significant maritime agitation, as announced by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
These districts will remain under red alert until 09:00 AM on Tuesday as the Hermínia depression approaches the country, bringing increased precipitation and strong winds.
The IPMA anticipates northwest waves with significant heights of 7 to 8 meters, potentially reaching a maximum of 14 meters.
Additionally, from this afternoon until the early hours of Monday, the IPMA has issued an orange warning for the same districts due to persistent and at times heavy rainfall.
All districts in the country are under a yellow warning for strong winds. Furthermore, starting Monday afternoon, snowfall will trigger a similar alert level in the districts of Braga, Bragança, Castelo Branco, Guarda, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real, and Viseu.
The red warning indicates an extreme weather risk, while the orange warning signifies moderate to high risk, and the yellow warning indicates risk for specific weather-dependent activities.
The IPMA forecasts rain today, with increasing intensity from the afternoon, particularly persistent in the North. Winds will blow from the south, intensifying in the afternoon, especially along the coast and highlands of the North and Center. The maritime agitation will be strong, with waves from the west measuring 3 to 3.5 meters on the western coast, gradually increasing to 4 to 5 meters, and reaching 5 to 6 meters north of Cabo Mondego.
