UGT's Strong Stance on Labor Reforms
Mário Mourão, the secretary-general of the UGT (General Union of Workers), has issued a stark warning to the government. He stated that if faced with a choice between signing a bad agreement in social concertation or taking to the streets in protest, the UGT unequivocally prefers the latter. This declaration comes at a critical time as the government and social partners are negotiating a labor package that has drawn significant criticism from unions.
Government's Proposed Changes Under Fire
Mourão expressed strong disapproval of the draft proposal under discussion, labeling it as not positive. He further accused the government led by Luís Montenegro of shifting its stance, becoming less attentive to the needs of workers. The proposed labor package involves amendments to over a hundred articles of the Labor Code, which Mourão believes will lead to a difficult period for workers during negotiations.
Emphasis on Dialogue and Fair Solutions
During the closing session of a seminar organized by the Federation of Public Administration Unions, Mourão underscored the importance of social dialogue in achieving "just and lasting" solutions. He called for negotiations that recognize the vital role of state workers, reinforcing the UGT's commitment to protecting workers' rights through collective action if necessary.
